Hell Comes to Disney: We didn't think an installment of
Across the Universe would have the word "Disney" in it so much, but life's
strange like that. Hot on the heels of Disney's Marvel purchase (see next page)
came the news that the family-friendly studio had inked a deal with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro for a series of
animated films under the banner Disney Double Dare You. According to the press
release, the movies will be "full of chills and thrills for audiences of all
ages," which means they'll probably fall somewhat short of del Toro's "Blade 2"
in the gore department. Yet his magnificent "Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's
Labyrinth" both had a fable-like quality which could easily presage darker, more
sophisticated animated and children's movies. The first project is called
"Trollhunters," and as with anything del Toro does, we'll be watching.
