Best Reviewed Vampire Movies
Which blood-sucking films ranks high among fans?
MSN Movies
Our friends at Rotten Tomatoes have put together a list of the top 25 best
reviewed vampire movies of all-time. We have the top 10 here, but make sure you
go to RottenTomatoes.com for the rest of the list.
I'll let them take it away from here...
How do you explain our collective fascination with vampires? Well, in spite
of the terrible curse that they must endure, these undead bloodsuckers have some
attributes to which almost anyone can relate - and sometimes envy. Vampires live
forever, but are mostly hated (or at least misunderstood). They are usually
sophisticated and seductive, but must prey on the living to survive. With
Halloween come and gone and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" right around the corner, we at
RT thought it was high time to pay tribute to those legions of the undead that
have won the critics' approval, from "Dracula" to "Twilight."
Not all vampire movies follow the same conventions -- you don't see Edward
Cullen (Robert Pattinson) of "Twilight" turning into a bat. However,
we've laid down a set of ground rules for our list. Each film included here has
at least 20 reviews, and they're ranked utilizing a weighted formula that takes
Tomatometer ranking, number of reviews, and year of release into account. That
means some films (like Carl Theodor Dreyer's classic "Vampyr") seem to be ranked lower then the Tomatometer would
indicate. And although some selections included here (like "I Am Legend") may seem to stretch the criteria, they still
maintain the classic trappings of vampire lore, from blood-drinking to a
distaste for sunny days. So put away your mirrors, fix yourself a garlic-free
meal, and settle in for our list of the 25 best-reviewed vampire movies of all
time!
1. "Nosferatu" (1922) 98%
One of the silent era's most influential masterpieces, "Nosferatu's" eerie,
gothic feel -- and a chilling performance from Max Shrek as the vampire -- set
the template for the horror films that followed.
2. "Let the Right One In" (2008) 98%
"Let the Right One In" reinvigorates the seemingly tired vampire genre by
effectively mixing scares with intelligent storytelling.
3. "Nosferatu: The Vampyre" (1979) 94%
Stunning visuals from Werner Herzog and an intense portrayal of the famed
bloodsucker from Klaus Kinski make this remake of Nosferatu a horror classic in
its own right.
4. "Dracula" (1931) 93%
Bela Lugosi's timeless portrayal of Dracula in this creepy and atmospheric
1931 film has set the standard for major vampiric roles since.
5. "Near Dark" (1987) 93%
"Near Dark" is at once a creepy vampire film, a thrilling western, and a
poignant family tale, with humor and scares in abundance.
6. "Fright Night" (1985) 93%
"Fright Night" deftly combines thrills and humor in this ghostly tale about a
man living next to a vampire.
7. "Horror of Dracula" (1958) 89%
Trading gore for grandeur, Horror of Dracula marks an impressive turn for
inveterate Christopher Lee as the titular vampire, and a typical Hammer mood
that makes aristocracy quite sexy.
8. "Cronos" (1994) 89%
Guillermo del Toro's unique feature debut is not only gory
and stylish, but also charming and intelligent.
9. "Vampyr" (1931) 100%
Full of disorienting visual effects, Carl Theodor Dreyer's "Vampyr" is as
theoretically unsettling as it is conceptually disturbing.
10. "Thirst" (2009) 83%
The stylish Thirst packs plenty of bloody thrills to satisfy fans of both
vampire films and director Chan Wook Park.
