Strangers in the House

Home isn't so sweet in many great horror movies

By James Rocchi

There's no place like home, they say. For years, horror film makers have flipped the script on that old cliché, making the home's safety and security an arena for fears run wild, killers on rampages or the dry snap of madness echoing off the neat, ordinary walls of the living room. The upcoming remake of "The Stepfather" puts Dylan Walsh in the spotlight as a serial killer who keeps trying to make the perfect home, killing his mistakes to wipe the canvas clean when things go wrong. With "The Stepfather" turning the traditional image of the gentle father-figure at the head of the homestead into a grim vision of murder and madness, we thought we'd explore some other classic horror films, well-loved or under-seen, that turn living quarters (whether owned or rented) into dying places.
